Put Students First
Host student-led conferences.
This is extremely cool that I can relate to this at our school because we just ran a student led conference at connections. The only thing is that we did this off of a club not open for everyone to run. I am not sure how all students would be able to be involved.
Begin monthly classroom improvement meetings.
This is is also cool to see because Mr. McCarthy holds meetings during lunch about how to improve our school as a whole. It would be cool to see a class based around improvements and advancements we would take.
Change your classroom environment.
Instead of putting desks in rows, switch it up! How can you and your students design the classroom to emphasize peer-to-peer collaboration, movement, and flexibility? Some ideas include putting student desks in groups, investing in communal tables, and creating a wonder-wall in the classroom where students can post questions they have before, during, and after inquiry projects.
This is something that is super cool and I only see a few teachers doing this. Sadly, most teachers have the classroom the exact same as it was in the beginning of year.
Set aside time for passion projects.
Research shows that interest drives learning. Give students time for passion projects where they must dig deep to find answers to questions they’ve always wondered about. This reminds me of our innovations projects throughout the whole entire year. We chose our passion, and were given time each day.
Connect with local businesses.
Internships connect with local businesses, senior year. I am wondering if it would be possible to have other job days for all grades. Senior year you are already into college, and most likely have your major as well. What if you are clueless in years other than senior year? This could help.
Overall I think these steps to putting students first are really helpful and eye opening. With a few small changes we could make Sutton a place with more resources and activities. These changes could help students feel more valued as we do make up most of the school!
Overall though, I do think our school does a pretty good job! It is really cool to see how we are staying on top of everything, we could do better though.
Improvement never stops!
