Field Trips, Field Trips, Field Trips

Here in Sutton, each year the number of field trips we go on decline.

Field trips are extremely important and vital for many different reasons.

In this article it states that field trips provide:

Real World Learning

Access tools and environments not available in school

Socio-emotional Growth

Academic Impact

Field trips are not only for having fun, but also promotes teamwork, hands on activities, learning outside the classroom, giving students a break from the everyday classroom life, and allows teacher and students to create different types of bonds.

Though in Sutton there are many different school trip opportunities, for example, Italy, Spain, Costa Rica, and Haiti they are found to be extremely expensive- as most children do not attend them. Small and simple field trips like rock climbing, or an Escape Room can provide many positive lessons, especially team work.

Team work is a necessity in school because "Teamwork skills will serve you well in your future career, but it is also extremely beneficial during your time in school. Regardless of what program you’re enrolled in, teamwork skills will likely be incorporated in your coursework and could go a long way in helping you excel academically. It’s time to stop dreading group work and leverage these opportunities to hone a valuable skill set". Field trips provide a way to get closer with classmates you see everyday, so when it is time to work with them in class, it is easier and feels more natural...less forced. Field trips do not need to be crazy expensive either, as there could be days where there are mini field trips spent in the gym doing teamwork activities.

This issue came to my mind when I found out we had 0 field trips put into our yearly calendar of junior year, the year that everyone says is the hardest and most stressful.

Why?

I remember in 7th grade we went to Canobie Lake Park and went to different science shows as the day went on. This field trip allowed us to know out teachers on more of a personal level, make new friends, and learn all about electricity and matter.

I will forever wish things were how they used to be...
